Young Los Angeles Fil-Ams celebrate EDSA

LOS ANGELES – An evening of art, music and People Power transpired as Fil-Am youth commemorated the 30th anniversary of the EDSA revolution that toppled the Ferdinand Marcos dictatorship in 1986.

“It is due to the beliefs of the people to fight for social justice, fight for change,” KmB, Pro-People Youth member Eddie Gana said. “It’s very relevant today, as you see with the People Power Movement and it goes to the Black Lives Matter movement and that is totally people driven.”

While many of the youth were not born yet during the revolution, they heard from those who consider themselves products of martial law.

“All of a sudden my world at the university had changed from an environment of what we appreciate and take for granted as academic freedom changed,” said one speaker named Carol. “And that was done and it became a virtual prison.”

Fil-Am community leader Jocelyn Gaega believes it’s important to continue the stories of their struggles, since many of the issues continue 30 years after martial law.

“A lot of the youth here probably were not born yet at the time so it’s a real opportunity to share my personal memories of that period of time,” said Gaega. “A very emotional period of time.”

For KmB, Pro-People Youth activists, paying homage to EDSA is also celebrating their roots. The group can trace their beginnings as one of the many activist groups founded during the Marcos dictatorship.

“As we see KmB Pro-People Youth, we focus on issues that affect our local communities,” said Gana. “It’s important for us to continue that tradition and revolutionary spirit that culminated in 1986.”

The problem with some people is that they’re so fast in opening their mouth but is/are lacking resourcefulness and know how. Likewise, it would be very shallow or idiotic to blog criticism about Bongbong Marcos when you lack research. Why don’t you go to his website to find the answers that Wikipedia lacks…Sorry to elaborate that he came out strong at the onset of typhoon Yolanda actually on the ground while the Aquino administration are busy feuding with people in Leyte. ..

I see it everyday how much bias a media has against one name…the Marcoses…supposedly the media like this one would mold every Filipino mindset by advocating selfish and one sided stories of abuse. It is equally comparable to say we have freedom from dictatorship as all the imprisoned CPP-NPA members were released and continue to terrorized, abuse, kill or illegally collect dues from the poor-at gun point or their death?
