Winter weather woes continue across the country

NEW YORK – An arctic blast left much of North America in a deep freeze.

It was so cold in Baltimore, Md. that authorities declared code blue until Friday – an alert declared when the mercury dips below 13 degrees Fahrenheit.

It authorizes government agencies to provide extra protection for the homeless, senior citizens and other vulnerable populations.

Meantime, putting out a fire in zero-degree weather was a challenge for firefighters in Whiting, Ind. where their hats, gloves and equipment including their radios turned into ice.

Whiting Fire Department Chief Gus Danielides said, “We have great radios but after they get wet and they get frozen, now our communication is down. So we rely on a lot of hand signals and just knowing what we have to do at the scene.”

In Waterloo, Iowa temperatures were so low they’re considered dangerous.

Classes were cancelled as the mercury slipped into negative digits and wind chills dropped as low as 35 degrees below zero.

A wind chill advisory is in effect to warn Iowans that frostbites can develop within 30 minutes of skin exposure to these freezing conditions.

In Lockport, NY,  city schools cancelled classes Wednesday to protect kids from the extreme cold and freezing windchill.

Meantime, the Bryant Park fountain in New York City is slowly turning into ice — a sign that the mercury has dropped to the lower teens.

Even the usually crowded Time Square looked empty on a freezing Wednesday night.

The bitter cold weather has a group of Filipinos visiting from New Zealand all bundled up.

Boyax De La Rosa of Auckland said, “It’s so cold here. My face, the breeze of the wind, it’s really like having lock jaw.”

Brooklyn, NY resident Josh Hugo said, “This is kind of different because my hands are even cold. But you’re used to it. So any winter you say, ‘Bring it on!'”

But there’s one business in Manhattan that is welcoming this winter blast with open arms – the ice skating rink at the Bryant Park Winter Village.
