Why Kathniel was mentioned in New York magazine

MANILA – Filipino readers of the bi-weekly US publication New York will surely recognize one of the mentioned “ships” — a social media-age term for imagined or actual couples — in its latest issue featuring the online writing community Wattpad.

In the issue of New York magazine released March 9, an extensive feature on Wattpad listed, among others, the favorite fandoms or written-about topics, as well as statistics of users such as time spent on the website and demographics.

For instance: Did you know that in 2014 alone, fan-fiction uploads numbered 14 million? — and that’s not counting original stories. To date, Wattpad already has over 30 million uploaded stories featuring pre-existing characters or real-life personalities.

In the Philippines, Wattpad has helped launched careers of amateur writers whose popular uploads have been adapted for television or film. Among the hit Wattpad titles that have gotten the big-screen treatment are “Diary ng Panget,” “Talk Back and You’re Dead” and “She’s Dating the Gangster.”

The latter, about high school classmates whose pretend relationship become real, starred teen superstars Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla — themselves one of the most popular topics on Wattpad worldwide.

Only second to “Larrystylinson” — the ship between One Direction’s Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson — “Kathniel” has been tagged over 8,100 times on Wattpad. The former led by a wide margin with over 61,100 tags, which means uploaded stories featuring or with scenes of the ship is likely the same number.

Kathniel’s ranking in “Most Popular Ships” on Wattpad is not surprising, considering the list of countries that are most active on the website. In order, countries that have uploaded the most fan fiction to Wattpad are the United States, Great Britain, the Philippines, Canada, Australia, Germany, Mexico and Spain.

According New York based doctor Gener Acob, the story on Kathniel is nothing new to the Filipino community that is based on the concept of “same bus, different driver”. It is a common script in the Philippine cinema such as snatching someone’s bag, watch, cell phone, jewelry, etc. that could be performed by new kid from the block action-drama stars bucking for popularity. Acob added, excusee, excusee, what is this Wattpad doing to Kathniel? It seems that Wattpad discovered something people have never seen before? Where in the realm of things, Kathniel’s story has been repeated over and over through Philippine history and that “Wattpad” being the new kid in the block getting a hand of it.
