WHO says coronavirus accelerating as confirmed cases worldwide exceed 350,000

The World Health Organization has now recorded more than 350,000 cases of COVID-19 from nearly every country worldwide — with over 15,000 deaths.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is calling for global political commitment to change the trajectory of the pandemic, urging countries to take both defensive and attacking measures.

“The pandemic is accelerating. It took 67 days from the first reported case to reach the first 100,000 cases. Eleven days for the second hundred thousand cases and just four days for the third hundred thousand cases.”

Ghebreyesus pointed out that stay at home orders are only defensive measures and this virus needs to be attacked as well with aggressive testing and isolation of cases.

“To win we need to attack the virus with aggressive and targeted tactic. Testing every suspected case, isolating and caring for every confirmed case and tracing and quarantining every close contact.”

Meanwhile, the Senate has failed to advance the latest coronavirus stimulus bill that aims to provide a nearly $2 trillion economic rescue package.

“We were this close, this close. And yesterday morning, the speaker of the house flew back from San Francisco. And suddenly, the Senate’s serious bipartisan process turned into this left-wing episode of supermarket sweep, unrelated issues left and right,” said Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

“We’ve been working on a few outstanding issues that are no surprise to everyone. From the very beginning, Democrats have insisted on a marshall plan for our medical system, more money for hospitals, community health centers, nursing homes, and urgent medical supplies like gloves and masks, ICU beds, testing kits, ventilators.”

Over the weekend three more U.S. states have given virtual lockdown orders — Michigan, Massachusetts, and Louisiana have ordered residents to stay at home and for non-essential businesses to be closed.

President Donald Trump has also ordered the National Guard to be deployed to New York, California, and Washington to assist in humanitarian efforts, but clarified that their respective governors remain in command.

The National Guard can assist in logistical and other capabilities that include airlift, ground transportation, command and control, engineering, kitchens, tents and medical personnel.

They will initially help distribute food and medical supplies.

Meanwhile, the U.S. has exceeded more than 41,000 cases of COVID 19, with nearly 500 deaths according to the latest tally of Johns Hopkins University, surpassing Spain over the weekend with the 3rd largest number in the world.

The state of New York has now more than 20,000 cases, with 98 deaths.
