First in Balitang America’s list of Pinoys in Action is
California Assemblymember Rob Bonta…the first Filipino to be elected in the California legislature.

In October, Bonta’s first of its kind bill was signed into law in California, requiring schools to teach about the contributions of Filipino-Americans in the farm labor movement.

Bonta also came to the aid of kababayans in need in the Philippines. He raised $40,000 for the victims of Typhoon Yolanda.

Next in Balitang America’s list of Pinoys in Action, is a heroic nurse who led her colleagues in evacuating 20 high-risk babies who were in the hospital to safety during Hurricane Sandy.

In February, she was invited by the White House to sit with First Lady Michelle Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden’s wife Jill — during President Barack Obama’s State of the Union Address.

During his speech, the president even mentioned Sanchez’ heroic act.

Third in Balitang America’s list of Pinoys in Action has become the most popular undocumented immigrant in America — Jose Antonio Vargas.

Vargas was among those that led the campaign for immigration reform to pass this year.

His controversial documentary, “Documented” was also picked up by by CNN films and was screened in theaters around the country.

Fourth in Balitang America’s list of Pinoys in Action…is the national chair of the U.S. Pinoys for Good Governance — Loida Nicolas Lewis.

Lewis led Filipino-Americans from different parts of the country…in fighting against corruption and injustice in the homeland.

She organized rallies — condemning the pork barrel and China’s so-called bullying of the Philippines amid territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

The last in the list of Balitang America’s Pinoys in Action for 2013…is Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra — the first Filipino and first Asian to coach the NBA.

This year, Spoelstra led his team to win back to back NBA championships.

The Miami Heat won the best team award at the Espys this year.

In November, Spoelstra and his team also pledged to donate at least a million dollars in relief operations for Typhoon Yolanda.
