‘Watsonville Riots:’ Fil-Am author highlights plight of Filipino farm workers

A Fil-Am author is shining light on an important part of Filipino history in America.

It started with a dance, and ended in violence.

An angry crowd of white men terrorizing Filipino farmworkers in Watsonville, California during the Great Depression.

Gabriel Pagtama is the author of Based on True Events: Watsonville Riots.

His lolo, a sakada from Hawaii, opened his eyes to Filipino farmers’ violent history in America while his father, actor Abe Pagtama, sparked his creative side.

Pagtama plans to turn his book into a big-screen event.

True to our resilient nature, Pagtama hopes for this generation to learn from the past.
