WAIPAHU — Now in its second year, the Waipahu HS Senior Literacy project comes from “design thinking,” a method that the school uses to create solutions, which includes alternative ways of brainstorming and hands-on projects.
Waipahu’s student population is over 60 percent Filipino, followed by Samoan, part-Hawaiian, and other ethnicities.
According to teacher Rachel Domingo, the senior literacy project is one way to improve students’ test scores and increase student motivation.
The senior literacy project at Waipahu High School allows students to create and write their own stories for elementary school children to read.
The books will be distributed this month to over four hundred kindergarten students in three elementary schools on Oahu.
