NEW YORK — Crazy Ex Girlfriend’s star Vince Rodriguez III is back in the Big Apple reading for a new musical – called The Hood.
“It’s based on Robin Hood, it’s called Hood the Musical, written by Carter B. and Louis Flynn. I’m playing Firetuck, one of the merry men.”
The Fil-Am Hollywood actor says his acting career all started in NYC.
“I’ve been in New York for over a decade trying to book my first Broadway show, that was my dream – to be on Broadway. That’s a dream if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere, there are songs about it.”
But that Broadway debut never happened.
His closest to Broadway was playing major roles in the Anything Goes tour and Here Lies Love the Musical — an off-Broadway show about Imelda Marcos.
“Through that, in time, working the waiter job that I didn’t wanna work or being a bartender, I worked a lot of odd jobs… every actor knows this, you do whatever you need to do to make money so you can pursue your art and create.”
Rodriguez says that also meant spending money to improve his craft.
“Pay for that dance class, pay for that acting class, pay for that singing lesson with that reputable voice teacher, I did that and I went to debt, which I paid off last year.”
After a string of smaller TV roles, Rodriguez’ investment paid off when he landed a lead role in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. He is now on his third season.
And his latest song and dance number on CXG has gone viral.
For Fil-Am actors trying to make it in Hollywood, Rodriguez has this to say.
“Risk failure at the possibility of success. You don’t get to success without taking risks, and without falling down, if you trip, that’s fine. A trip can prevent a fall, when you fall, just get right back up, it doesn’t matter how many times you fall down, what matters is your ability to get right back up.”
Meanwhile, CXG is just a few episodes away from its season finale and he is hoping to get signed up for its 4th season run.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend airs on the CW Fridays at 8 pm.
