Catholics in Manila held a vigil to pray for the cardinals as they entered into the papal conclave.
A spokesman for the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines said youth groups used Twitter and Facebook to organize the vigil.
One of the participants said they were ready to accept the new pope whether he is Filipino or not.
Manila archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle had earlier been cited by Vatican watchers as among the cardinals who have a shot at the papacy.
Tagle, though, is considered a long shot. He is only 55 years old.
Conclaves are said to be wary of picking young popes who could have very long reigns.
