REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – Utah’s Fil-Am Attorney General Sean Reyes asked the U.S. Supreme Court for emergency intervention on Wednesday to prevent about 1,300 same-sex marriages in his state from being recognized.

The move from Reyes’ office is a race to beat a Monday deadline, when a stay placed by the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals on lifting the state’s same- sex marriage ban will expire.

Reyes sent the state’s emergency application to Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the same judge who stayed the December ruling that briefly lifted Utah’s ban, clearing the way for about 1,300 same-sex couples to legally wed.

Last week Reyes said he had a sworn duty to revive Utah’s ban on same-sex marriage and vowed to bring Utah’s case to the highest court in the land.
