WASHINGTON (AP) — Key Senate Republicans are working to develop a compromise on border security that would satisfy party demands for stronger enforcement language in a far-reaching immigration bill without costing Democratic support, lawmakers and aides said Thursday.

Aiming to convince skeptical Republicans that the bill would truly achieve border security, senators were considering mandating specific requirements for equipment and other tools along the U.S.-Mexico border, instead of just leaving it up to the Obama administration, said Sen. John McCain, a Republican and an author of the bill.

“That may be a way to assuage the concern of some of our friends that are concerned about border security,” McCain. Sen. Marco Rubio, a Republican and another author, has discussed the same approach.

President Barack Obama is hoping immigration overhaul will pass by the end of the year so he can point to it as a major accomplishment in the first year of his second term of office. But the measure faces tough going in the Republican-led House which is take a more piecemeal approach to the issue

The Senate talks were underway behind-the-scenes at the Capitol Thursday even as the chamber voted 53 to 47 to defeat an amendment by Sen. Charles Grassley, a Republican, that would have required a controlled border for six months before any immigrant here illegally could take the first steps toward citizenship.
It was the first amendment the Senate voted on to the White House-backed immigration legislation.

The outcome suggested that bill supporters have work to do to lock down the 60 votes that will likely be needed to overcome Republican stalling tactics and get it passed in the 100-member Senate by July 4th, the timeline set by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat. .

The bill, which would amount to the most significant changes to immigration law in decades, would require all employers to check workers’ legal status, allow tens of thousands of new high- and low-skilled workers into the country, and create a 13-year path to citizenship for some 11 million people now here illegally.

The bill also devotes billions to new equipment and personnel along the U.S.-Mexico border, and says the path to citizenship can’t go forward until certain border security requirements are met. But critics say these “triggers” are too weak, because in some cases they require the Department of Homeland Security to implement plans, not actually show results.

“If we pass the bill as it is there will be no pressure on this administration or future administrations to secure the border,” Grassley said.

Rubio , a potential presidential candidate in 2016, has been saying that stronger language on border security would be needed to ensure passage in the Democratic-controlled Senate and the Republican-controlled House. The question now is how to do that without raising concerns among Democrats that the path to citizenship would be delayed — the reason that Sen. Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, and others gave for opposing Grassley’s amendment Thursday.

In the absence of an amendment that answers Republican concerns without alienating Democrats, Republicans have been voicing support for a measure by Sen. John Cornyn, a Republican, that requires 100 percent surveillance of the border and 90 percent of would-be crossers to be stopped before anyone can get a permanent resident green card. The bill as written includes those same figures as goals but doesn’t make the citizenship path contingent on them.

Schumer, McCain and others have dismissed Cornyn’s amendment as a non-starter, but they need to give Republicans who’ve backed it something else to support instead.

“We need to either convince Sen. Cornyn to move a little bit in our direction or have an alternative, and we’re working on an alternative that will satisfy many of the concerns the Republicans have,” McCain said.
Schumer said all the Gang of Eight senators who wrote the bill met Wednesday night and agreed they were open to changes on border security as long as they didn’t alter the bill’s core provisions or slow the path to citizenship.

Illegal Aliens are the lifeline of the Democrats, without the Illegal Aliens this party of chaos is lifeless, dead. The reform is a big time amnesty for millions Illegal Aliens, including criminal Illegal Aliens costing trillions to citizens and legal residents. The lies of the Democrats of back taxes fines, learn english, etc are nothing but lies. Reform qualifications for Illegal Aliens will not be followed, meant to be broken, total bogus to give way for these Illegal Aliens as Democrat voters. The American public are being sold to the Marxist/Socialist Agenda of the Democratic Party period.

You are nothing but a bunch of self-centered and one directional crazy scumbags. You do not understand the whole concept of this reform, you only look at the problem itself and not to the real and most sensible solution.

I am almost positive that in your lifetime that you have known or maybe even related to a undocumented alien, how did you or would you approach the person? Would you have the face to say to him/her to get out of here and come back to Philippines? Or you would show your fake support for their hardships being undocumented?

Narcissists are skillful manipulators and deceptive liars and can be very convincing. They can also be articulate and eloquent, charismatic and charming when seeking to get their way Jorge , they may still shove in our throat their lawlessness however it takes.

None of us will get the last laugh IDIOT ! The government would, all of these crap they are doing are out of the taxpayers expense. There goes your tax money going to Syria now, $300 million of our tax money. Of course for illegals like you you won’t pay a dime… Whether or not make illegal aliens become legal is not going to change anything in this country. This country would still be consists of immigrants whether or not they are legal or not. THAT”S A HARD FACT IDIOTS ! You all can keep on trying to persuade people into your rightist beliefs, but the truth is that NOTHING, and NOTHING will change the immigration system in this country.. It’s been done before, Reform has been done and illegal aliens still continues to flock into this country. Because the Immigration Laws allows them to come here. So, you people like Rick, Rodney, Delia and now Jorge Castanza este Buesa (kuno), really are no more than a happy meal short of a french fries….

What do this guy “O” is thinking? Is he thinking that we Filipinos are nothing but lazy bastards in this country that we do not earn our money? In reality, it’s the whites and blacks in this country that are lazies and blood sucking parasites of the society. Though not all of them but isn’t ashamed that their own race is the majority of those who are in EBT, section 8 homes, etc. ???

The stingy, greedy, right wing conservatives have nothing else to do but put the blame of our economy on the most vulnerable members of society when the fact of the matter is that they should be pointing their fingers on themselves for the economic crisis. The economy went south because of 2 wars they havent paid, greedy Capitalists paying minimum wages and outsourcing jobs to third world countries capitalizing much more on cheap labors and extorting their countries wealth. If one does their research, yes Mr O, then you should know that President Obama and the past Democratic prisedents spend the least amount of government/federal money. President Obama spends the least amount actually. He uses money to healp out people who have been neglected and affected by the greedy and negligence of the right wingconservatives. Put the money on people, from the bottom to the top of the social class. And helping the most vulnerable, the poor, the elderly are the scape goat of the greedy rich conservatives

The truth to the matter also is that you are not a content person of what you have. Not happy with you had, wished could have more…. Typical Filipino attitude.

Again, you are contradicting yourself, Capitalists are job creating people, yet sending them overseas to avoid hefty taxes? When did taxes become cheap??? It sure is cheap for those making astronomical amounts of money ! By the capitalists sending jobs overseas, what does do the economy here locally? Come on, that is common sense, yet you blame Obama for that? Wooooo…. No one in the right mind would believe you kasi ang labo mong kausap.

Bush spent 6 trillions in 8 years, 2 terms. Obama spent 8 trillions in 4 years, 1 term, have spent another trillion plus in one year. Obama instituted the Afghanistan war. The government job is to protect the freedom, rights of its people, not hand out the hard earned money of the working people to takers/suckers of other peoples money. You want money? go work hard for it, go out there to compete in the scarce job market created by the capitalists with Obama’s Marxist economics. You talk like money grows on trees. The capitalists are the money makers, entitled to do what they want to do with their own money, like open businesses out of the USA to avoid the hefty taxations of Obama. Just like, if you bought an expensive mercedes car with you hard earned dollars, will you allow other people you do not know or knew to drive them?, or loan free your mercedes car to help, go on a trip vacations?, some may or may not. Same way with capitalists, who are people too, some are too greedy, some are big contributors to worthy causes to benefit the majority or the public, but none will give out individually to those who will personally beg to them, try begging money, pleading you are down and out to Bill Gates, the leaning left winger, an Obama lover, you will readily be thrown out in the street, but Bill Gates have contributed billions to his choices of worthy causes to benefits the majority. The US Treasury’s money are the hard earned dollars of workers. Its not the money of the government, although Obama thinks its his money recklessly spending them since he took office, trillions went into dusts, causing the US treasury empty, borrowing have become a routine under Obama to pay off his millions suckers. The US Treasury collecting way, way less revenues with millions out of works, outweighed by millions sucking up the welfare system perpetrated by Obama and his Democratic party, their lingo is spending/borrowing, couldn’t care less since its not their money in bulk they are spending, but spending the income taxpayers money to stay in power, living up with their far, far lefty, liberal agendas.

Bottom line is they all need to spend those money ! Doesn’t really matter how much and who spent it. THEY STILL SPENT THE MONEY FOR NOTHING !

to blame and shows their jealousy because the help abd benefits they were getting before has now been shifted to the people of the bottom of social class. If that’s what they call Marxist and Socialist, then, hooray! Bravo! More power!
