LAS VEGAS — It’s now been more than 30 years since the University of the Philippines’ Fighting Maroons basketball team won it’s lone UAAP championship trophy, and 20 years since the team made to the Final Four.
In the last 10 years, the Fighting Maroons have changed coaches 7 times.
Current UP Head Coach Bo Perasol wants to change the team’s fortunes, and brought the Maroons to Las Vegas to level up their skills.
“Unang una napakalaki ng pagkaka iba kase ang hot bed talaga ng basketball is America and then dito sa impact Las Vegas ito din yung seat ng maraming pumupunta sa NBA marami ring mga NBA players practcing with us. Dito sa programa na to.”
Bo says their time here has made a huge difference on the strength and conditioning of his players.
“Minsan yung ginagawa naming training sa maynila medyo naninigas kami kaagad dito theres a mixture of parang stretching of mixing conditioning weight lifting so yung mga bagay na ginagawa ng mga matataas na kalibre ng players yung ang ginagawa namin dito.”
“We’ve seen a lot of growth for sure in our 12 years of existence,” said Andrew Moore, Impact basketball trainer. “We have a close relationships with Filipino teams, from professional level to college level, to high school team. We’ve seen the talent level really improved. There’s great coaching, great players, and it’s all coming together.”
The UP Fighting Maroons kick of their season 80 campaign against the UST Growling Tigers on September 10.
