Undocumented Filipino mother counts down the days to AB60 license test

LOS ANGELES – Maddie Villenueva has been undocumented for the past 11 years. A working mother of two, she’s been driving without a license.

“My life has been involved with Madeline and Madison since they were kids, since they were little, since they were in elementary, school, high school. I have to pick them up every day. So the car is like part of our lives,” she explained.

But in less than three weeks when her DMV appointment date arrives, Villanueva will finally be a step closer to one legal document: a drivers license.

“It’s a big relief from the past 11 years. Imagine that I’ve been hiding from the police for the past 11 years,” said Villanueva.

Beneficiaries of the AB60 license will begin taking the written tests after January 1, 2015. Over a million drivers are expected to benefit from the new law including some 400,000 undocumented Asian drivers.

A backlog at the DMV has piled up, and the wait for an appointment may take as long as two months at some locations.

“If you go on the DMV website especially the night before, especially around midnight, you can try to submit a request for an appointment and there may be last-minute cancellations so you may be able to get a next day appointment,” suggested Betty Hung of Asian Americans Advancing Justice.

The licenses and testing will cost $33, just like a typical state drivers license.

Applicants will need to bring proof of identity and where they live. After passing the written test, they can then make an appointment to take the behind the wheel test, something Villanueva hopes to finish within a few weeks.

An appointment is required to begin the application process, walk ins aren’t allowed except at the four recently opened DMV processing plants created in the wake of the Ab60 enactment.

Let’s hope DMV will not turn around and give their data base to Immigration office. Which mean it is easier for them to pick-up and deport illegals.
