SAN FRANCISCO — This was the scene during the very first Undiscovered SF last August: lines of people that stretched around the block — all trying to experience the free Filipino Night Market, featuring food, culture, and entertainment.
At this preview night of Undiscovered SF season two, the organizers say they are ready to provide a better experience.
“When people get together particularly Filipinos, when it’s around beats, grooves, eats, and fashion,” says Desi Danganan. “We come out in droves so this year we are really preparing for a much larger crowd so we’re extending our hours, choosing a much bigger space.”
Undiscovered SF will once again be showcasing the best in Filipino food — everything from the Lumpia Company, to Jeepney Guy’s lechon, to even vegan options such as dishes from Nick’s Kitchen.
“We’re trying to capture that taste so that it’s easier for them to transition from meat to our food and they’re usually surprised how good it is,” said Reina Montenegro.
These chefs credit Undiscovered SF for giving them a place to grow and get their name out there.
The chefs say it fills them with pride knowing that through food — more people are learning and appreciating Filipino culture.
“It gives me great pleasure to watch someone bite into something they never tasted before and be surprised and totally delighted by something that just tastes delicious,” said Deanna Sison.
For those involved — Undiscovered SF is continuing to become a cultural hub for all Filipinos to come together and build and maintain the community.
“You see Filipino people especially our generation doing things historically in small groups and undiscovered is the first thing that I experienced that has been a mass community effort to really raise everybody across the board.”
Undiscovered SF season two premieres at 401 Minna Street on Saturday, July 21st from 4 pm to 10 pm, and every third Saturday following.
