U.S. measles outbreak over

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – Officials declared Friday that a measles outbreak believed to have started in Southern California four months ago is over.

Health officials have been scrambling for months to contain the highly contagious disease which started in Disneyland in December and spread to seven states, Mexico, and Canada.

During this period investigators found that the measles virus in the California cases shared the same genetic characteristics as the type most commonly found in the Philippines. They also that it’s likely the virus may have originated in the Philippines.

The outbreak sickened 147 people in the US, including 131 in California.

There were no deaths.

Health officials say the outbreak is over because no new infections have been reported in the past 42 days — or two incubation periods.

But while measles outbreak may be over in California, the political debate over vaccination continues.

For the 131 measles cases in California linked to the Disneyland outbreak,  most of the patients were completely unvaccinated.

This prompted legislation that requires children to be vaccinated in California.

A debate on the controversial bill has been pushed for next week after hundreds of Californians swarmed the State Capitol on Wednesday to oppose it. Protestors say the bill tramples on their right not to vaccinate their children against contagious diseases like measles based on their personal beliefs.

Parents who refuse to have their children vaccinated and did not have a medical exemption would be forced to teach their children at home.
