Trump says executive order to halt immigration will “prioritize jobs for Americans”

President Trump gave more clarity on his upcoming executive order to halt all immigration to the U.S. amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The goal, he reiterated, is to prioritize jobs for Americans.

“By pausing, immigration we’ll help put unemployed Americans first in line for jobs as America reopens. So important. It would be wrong and unjust for Americans laid off by the virus to be replaced with new immigrant labor flown in from abroad.”

Amidst concerns that this order would impact food and health industries that rely heavily on migrant workers, Trump said that they are not included in the 60-day ban.

The immigrants that are included, on the other hand, are those seeking for green cards — affecting many immigrants, including Filipinos.

“This pause will be in effect for 60 days, after which the need for any extension or modification will be evaluated by myself and a group of people based on economic conditions at the time. This order will only apply to individuals seeking a permanent residency. In other words, those receiving green cards, big factor, will not apply to those entering on a temporary basis.”

Meanwhile, Trump also announced that 20 states, or 40% of the U.S. population, are already laying out plans on how to reopen their economies soon.

“They’re moving along pretty quickly. Three announced today, as you know. And they’re gonna be doing it safely, they’re going to be doing it with tremendous passion. There’s a, they want to get back to work. The country wants to get back to work.”

Those three states that just announced reopening plans are Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina.

Their plan is to ease on social distancing guidelines and allow some businesses to reopen by Friday.

Residents in those states will soon be allowed to go to their barbers, go to the movies, and dine in restaurants.

But some business owners in Georgia are concerned.

“You know, obviously opening would be awesome, um, but we also want to make sure we’re doing the right thing. You know, that’s a hard choice between making money and thinking of, you know, the welfare of our clients. ”

“I personally think it’s incredibly irresponsible to be opening at this point without additional testing for antibodies. Without knowing who’s a carrier and asymptomatic. Without having all the supplies that we need. Masks. Hand sanitizer. Clorox wipes.”

A model released by the Institute for Health Metrics and evaluation of the University of Washington that is also being used by the White House coronavirus task force identified states that are ready to be reopened and when.

The earliest would be in early May, and that list includes North Carolina, Hawaii and Montana.

It also showed the 12 states that should wait until early June or later before considering relaxing social distancing guidelines.

Georgia is one of the 12 states.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned that reopening too soon could cause a flare-up, and a second wave of the coronavirus could hit harder once flu season comes.
