Trump and Congress reach temporary deal to end government shutdown

It’s the announcement that hundreds of thousands of federal employees have been waiting to hear for five weeks.

“I am very proud to announce today that we have reached a deal to end the shutdown and reopen the federal government,” said Trump.

The tentative deal among congressional leaders and president Trump does not include the much-debated $5.7 billion funding for the wall construction along the U.S.-Mexico border, a demand from President Trump, which first triggered the shutdown in December.

“[We] will sign bill to open government for 3 weeks until February 15th.”

A bi-partisan committee of lawmakers, the president said, would meet to discuss security needs.

This short-term deal came as tangible impact started to make headlines — and a day after two votes in the Senate failed.

Flights at three of the busiest airports in the country are delayed on Friday morning because of staffing shortages at air traffic control center.

There are also reports that thousands of internal revenue employees ordered to return to their jobs unpaid have not shown up to work.

Carsen Mata has been on furlough since the shutdown began on December 22nd. She said ending of the shutdown does not mean things would be back to normal immediately.

“It might take folks a couple of weeks to a month to get back on their feet with all of the money they have missed..”

Mata, who has missed her second paycheck on today, like the rest of the 800,000 federal employees affected, said she has been surviving with the help of family members.

“Coming from the family that I do, and I’m sure you’re all familiar how generous our Lolos and Lolas are and I come from a family that has always made me feel that I’m gonna be okay.”

The president has said he would sign the bill to temporarily re-open the government.

But if he doesn’t get a fair deal to build a wall, the president warned, he is prepared to once again shutdown the government on February 15th or use his power to declare a national emergency.
