TORONTO — It was a historic proclamation in the Canadian city.
Beginning in 2018, the city will now celebrate the month of June as Filipino Heritage Month.
The move marks the first time for such a proclamation in Canada’s history.
The motion to designate June as Filipino Heritage Month was put forward by Toronto Councillor Neethan Shan.
Over 160,000 Filipinos call Toronto home and Tagalog counts among the top most spoken languages in the city.
Tagalog is also the fastest growing language across Canada.
Councillor Shan’s motion recommends that the entire province of Ontario, as well as Canada’s federal government follow Toronto’s example in declaring June as Filipino Heritage Month.
