REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – The Philippines top diplomat appealed to the United States to grant temporary protected status (TPS), so undocumented Filipinos in America could help the Philippines recover from Typhoon Yolanda.
In a letter to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, Foreign Affairs Secretary Elbert Del Rosario said a TPS designation for the Philippines will allow more than 200,000 undocumented Filipinos to stay and work legally in the U.S. for at least 18 months.
Manila formally filed for TPS designation last December, a few weeks after Typhoon Yolanda.
