This Filipina-Canadian doctor is Toronto’s chief medical officer

TORONTO — As the medical chief officer, it’s a big responsibility to oversee the well-being of 2.8 million Torontonians.

Dr. Eileen de Villa took over Canada’s largest municipal public health unit last year.

Her department provides an array of health programs and services and prepares the city for outbreaks and emergencies, like a potential flu pandemic.

The job has the mother of three young boys juggling responsibilities in her mission for a stronger, healthier, more vibrant community.
