REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – Twenty one-year old Katherine de la Cruz hails from Mountain House, Calif. but her sights are set on Broadway.
The classically trained singer got her start at a young age, studying a wide range of musical genres.
“I started singing in my car to ‘ABCs’ and ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’, and my mom noticed that I have a good voice, so I began classically training at the age of seven,” Dela Cruz said. “But I got bored of opera, so I do musical theatre now, and R&B and anything—you name it.”
Dela Cruz said she found her niche in musical theater, and that the secret to a good performance is the ability to connect with the song.
“I find something in my past experience or what has made me feel this way; what has made me feel sad; what has made me feel romantic; what has made me feel in love,” she explained. “Then I find that experience in my past, and I put it into my song.”
At her TFCKat semifinal audition last month, Katherine definitely connected with the judges.
If she wins the grand TFCKat prize, she plans to pursue her musical theater dream, and another dream beyond Broadway.
“I’ve never been to Philippines and I want to try and get there,” she said. “I mean, I’m from the Philippines. My parents were born there. So I just want to see my home.”
Will she be that next star?
Will find out on Sunday at One Kapamilya Go!
