Suspect in murder of 21-year-old Filipina in Las Vegas found guilty
LAS VEGAS — Brandon Hanson, the killer of Fil-Am Makayla Rhiner, was found guilty of first-degree murder. Rhiner was only 21 when she was found dead at the garage of this southwest neighborhood in Vegas.
After 6 hours of deliberation, a jury found 34-year-old Hanson guilty of the murder of Makayla Leilani Rhiner.
The conviction includes charges of first degree murder with a deadly weapon, vandalizing, burglary, and robbery.
He claimed that he was depressed over his break-up with Rhiner, who he dated for 3 months. The two met while attending college of Southern Nevada.
Hanson confessed to detectives that he suffered severe depression and threatened to commit suicide. His defense failed to convince the jury.
On August 3rd, 2017, Rhiner was found dead in the garage of her apartment. She sustained several stab wounds to the neck and chest along with a head trauma.
“I cannot comment on him, I do not know him. I only saw him in court. Justice should prevail for whatever he did,” said Makayla’s grandmother, Dr. Ludmilla Pingol. “And I thank the Filipino community for giving us all the support, and all our friends and family to help us cope.”
Brandon Hanson is facing life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. He is scheduled to be sentenced on August 7.
