REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – New York police announced Wednesday morning that they have arrested the suspect wanted for the brutal beating of openly gay journalist Randy Gener.
Queens resident Leighton Jennings, 24, was arrested Tuesday night and charged with second degree assault.
The Associated Press reports that NYPD Hate Crime Task Force has determined that the attack was neither a hate crime, nor a bias crime.
Gener was on his way home from a Broadway after-party on Jan. 18 when he was brutally punched in the face in Midtown Manhattan, just a block away from his home.
In an emailed statement, Gener’s sister Jessica Blair Driessler declined on-cam interviews at this time so she could spend more time with randy.
She wrote: “We are pleased and relieved that a suspect has finally been apprehended and trust that the NYPD and district attorney will make all efforts to bring justice for Randy. At this time, we are focusing on Randy’s healing and moving forward together as a family.”
She thanked the Filipino community’s solidarity and generosity. She also thanked the New York police department for conducting a thorough and swift investigation.
