REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – A Spanish nurse assistant has become the first person known to have contracted Ebola outside Africa.

She helped care for two Ebola patients in Madrid, who later died from the virus.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it feels confident preventative measures will block an Ebola outbreak from occurring inside the United States.

Ebola spreads through contact with the bodily fluids of someone who has the virus and the only way to stop an outbreak is to isolate those who are infected.

Filipino nurses recently joined more than a thousand nurses who attended a recent California Nurses Association convention in Las Vegas to urge hospitals to keep protecting health workers from the Ebola virus.
