SAN FRANCISCO — Samantha Duenas — better known as SOSUPERSAM — headlined the latest Undiscovered SF, a monthly Filipino night market in San Francisco.
The Los Angeles-based Filipino American artist has turned her love of music, particularly old school R&B, into a career as an in-demand international DJ.
Duenas said she likes to think that becoming a DJ was a natural progression.
“Sometimes I get asked, how did you even get into DJing and I’m well I’m Filipino. Being Filipino American in Southern California, I think they just go hand-in-hand. I don’t know that I could have had like a Filipino childhood without being surrounded by DJing and breakdancing and lots of music and lots of food. It’s just part of who we are.”
Being Filipino is something Duenas is really proud of, and expresses every chance she gets, especially on social media.
Duenas is also a Filipino foodie who has been supporting Philippine cuisine, along with various Pinoy chefs around the country.
Recently, Duenas has stepped out of the DJ booth and pursued a path as a performing artist.
After a successful tour last year, Duenas said she will continue to work hard at making performing part of her craft.
“It’s got its challenges, for sure. And It’s tough to juggle a lot of different things, but I just try to always navigate based on what gives me joy. I just feel really fortunate to be able to have the freedom to express myself in different ways and see what happens.”
Duenas is currently working on her debut album and has plans to release more singles before the year ends.
Meanwhile — she said she’ll always love DJ-ing for a crowd who loves good music.
