SF Consulate honors extraordinary Filipinos in Spark Connect Empower campaign

SAN FRANCISCO — 121 years of Philippine Independence was recently celebrated in San Francisco.

It was a packed house of community leaders, foreign dignitaries, and more.

For the Philippine Consul General Henry Bensurto, this occasion also meant to celebrate three Filipino Americans in honor of his Spark Connect Empower campaign.

  • Clark Kent Apauada is the young boy who broke Olympian Michael Phelps 23-year swimming record.
  • Veronica de La Cruz is a veteran journalist who has worked for CNN, NBC, and who currently serves as an anchor on KPIX 5 Bay Area. She also runs her non-profit, “Hope for Hearts,” dedicated to her younger brother and mother, who both died of heart disease.
  • Jessica Cox is a motivational speaker, martial artist, and the first armless licensed pilot.

“In addition of the achievements, the personal achievements of people, we’re looking at how those achievements impact in sparking pride among our community members about their Filipino heritage.”
