Bay Area Filipinos fundraise for N-95 masks for victims of Taal volcano eruption, coronavirus threat

NEWARK, CA — The community was invited to walk through the parking lot of the Aloft Silicon Valley Hotel for a free car show on Saturday.

From sports cars to SUV’s — these tuned up and modified vehicles were on display.

And in the evening, musical performances and a raffle giveaway with a signed Steph Curry Warriors jersey as the grand prize.

This whole event was called “Sunrise Relief Effort 2020” — a fundraising effort to raise $10,000 and purchase as many N-95 masks as possible, to help tens of thousands of people impacted by the Taal volcanic eruption in the Philippines last January.

Organizers also knew the masks are needed back in the Philippines —- with the continued threat of coronavirus.

“When you hear these types of news and you hear that even your family are affected you want to do something because life out here, I guess you can say, you have better opportunities to give back,” said Joseph Alalay. “So it was like a no brainer for us to see what we can do and put it out in our network and pull out an event.”
