Key senators are exploring an item for inclusion to the immigration bill that would require every U.S. worker—legal or undocumented—to carry a high-tech identity card that could use fingerprints or other personal markers to prove a person’s legal eligibility to work.

The senate group, led by South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, is pushing for workers to prove their legal status and identities, through non-forgeable government issued biometric cards. Fingerprints, scans of the veins on the top of a person’s hand, or other personal markers would also be part of the records. American citizen would be required to produce his or her card, to prove eligibility for work.

A senior White House official said like the senators, President Barack Obama is also calling for an improved worker-verification system, but he doesn’t specifically call for a new biometric card system. The official said the president is instead calling for fraud and tamper-resistant social security cards.
