Senator Ted Cruz' Bataan filibuster angers Filipino community

Los Angeles–After Texas senator Ted Cruz’ compared his 21-hour “filibuster action” speech to the Bataan death march, Filipino American groups have lashed out demanding an apology from the republican lawmaker.

Earlier this week, Cruz took to the Senate floor for a 21-hour speech in an attempt to defund the Affordable Care Act. He ended the marathon speech Wednesday morning thanking those who had witnessed his nearly day long speech. “I don’t want to miss the time to do something imperative that I do which is to thank the men and women who have endured this Bataan Death March,” he said.

His comparison of his speech to the Bataan Death March has drawn criticisms from the Filipino community and California Democratic Party Women’s Caucus chair Christine Pelosi.

“Rather than use the Bataan Death March as an allusion to his speech to defund Obamacare, Ted Cruz should meet with — and apologize to — Filipino veterans for his despicable, disingenuous Bataan Death March allusion. He should be seeking justice for Filipino veterans not cheap political tricks for himself,” Pelosi demanded.

Arnedo Valera, the co-executive director of the Migrant Heritage Commission, commended Pelosi’s statement, issuing their own statement. “Senator Cruz does not have the slightest idea of the torture and sufferings of our World War II veterans in Bataan Death March. It is a grave insult to the national dignity and a degradation of the heroic services of our war veterans,” Valera

My interpretation on Sen.Ted Cruz filibuster action is that Americans are heading for a Bataan death march (Train wreck), if Obamacare will not be defunded. He reminded us that not a single Republican member voted the Affordable Care Act(Obamacare). As what Democrat Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi said “signed the bill now and find out what is inside later”.You will remember Sen.Ted Cruz and the Republican party on 2014 election when you feel the pain and suffering on tax and medical Insurance increases..

Senator Ted Cruz should study history and find out how thousands of Filipino and American soldiers endured unspeakable sufferings during that epic march for the sake of freedom and democracy. Senator Cruz — and anyone — should never again trivialize the Bataan Death March. Senator Cruz apologize to the heroes of the Death March for his ignorance and poor taste.
