Senator De Lima: “Duterte is a killer”

WASHINGTON DC – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has made international headlines following a controversial admission, at a recent speech at the Peter Wallace Business Forum.

“…I’d go around in Davao with a motorcycle, with a big bike around, and I would just patrol the streets, looking for trouble also,” Duterte admitted at the business conference. “I was really looking for a confrontation so I could kill.”

The Philippine President doubled down on his public admission of killing suspected “criminals” in a speech before Filipinos, during a state visit to Cambodia.

The president said he is just fulfilling his campaign promises.

“If you are into drugs, and destroy our youth – the next generation after us, pag’ ginawa ninyo yun gunggong at marami ang siraulo and I would hate it, and I will kill you… simple lang yan,” Duterte has controversially said.

While supporters seem to agree with the President, Philippine Senator Leila de Lima, Duterte’s most outspoken critic, says that this public admission of murder is no laughing matter.

“It’s an admission that he is a criminal, so that’s why it’s an unfortunate that we are in such [a] situation, that we have a murderer for a president,” she commented.

De Lima claims that Duterte’s violent acts is exactly what she has been saying all along.

“[What I’ve been] saying all along – the President is a killer, that in fact he is a mass murderer,” she said. “He is guilty of that mass murder when he was the Mayor of Davao City because of the Davao Death Squad, and now he is doing the same thing [as President].”

De Lima, who was recently recognized as one of Foreign Policy magazine’s Top 100 Global Thinkers, says that she is saddened and baffled at how supporters are desensitized to the Philippine President’s admission of killings.

“Marami pa rin po ang naniniwala sa kanya, marami pa rin po ang nagbubulag-bulagan,” she said.

“Sa kabila ng mga ganyan na pag-amin ng paggawa ng krimen at hindi lang isang beses ng pagpatay, kung hindi ilang beses at ginagawa pa rin ngayon sa buong Pilipinas.

De Lima asks people, “Nasaan ho yung outrage?”

In Singapore, Duterte has said there is no proof that he has committed crimes.

“Wala man akong record na sino yung tinamaan, sino yung natumba, paki-check na lang ho sa punerarya nandyan naman sila,” he said. “Look, it can never be a crime to say I will kill you if you destroy my country. That is a very legitimate statement.”

Today, there are nearly 6,000 drug-related deaths in the Philippines, more than half of which were gunned down “vigilante-style” by unknown hitmen, according to the Washington Post.

Last October, President Duterte publicly declared that he will be happy to slaughter all 3 million drug addicts in his country.
