Seattle awards Filipino Community Center with funds for low-income senior housing

An early Christmas in Seattle, as the city awarded its Filipino Community Center with nearly $11 million to construct homes for low-income seniors, as well as a youth center.

“The Filipino Community Center has been a dream for many of the community for many many years,” said Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan. “This community has been at the heart of trying to preserve the culture of the Filipino community.”

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan announced the move on Monday at the non-profit Filipino Community Center, or FCC, as part of the city’s $100 million+ investment in affordable housing projects.

“Today you have given us the Filipino community of Seattle, the best Christmas gift in our 83 years of history,” said co-chair Alma Kern.

The project, known as the Filipino Community Village, will construct 94 homes for low-income seniors and is expected to be finished by the year 2020.
