NEW YORK–The search for the first Filipino to go to space has begun.

Astronaut Buzz Aldrin to unveiled an online contest
at the American Museum of Natural History in New York on Wednesday, that would send 22 winners to space aboard a private spaceship.

Among the winners from around the globe, one will be Filipino. Two more Filipinos will be chosen to attend a space camp in Florida for a chance to win another golden ticket to outer space.

The winners will launch aboard X-Cor Aerospace’s Lynx , a mini space shuttle-like space vehicle which takes off like a regular airplane and will reach space in four minutes.

Aldrin said the winners will have to undergo astronaut training similar to what he went through, but shortened to a few days.

Asked what the basic requirements for astronaut training are, Aldrin said: “I would imagine good health medically, and the ability to communicate before the flight and after the flight back to their country to inspire other people. It’s a beginning of a new era of inspiration of achievement,” said Aldrin.

Aldrin added that the Philippines has a special meaning for him.

“As a youngster I’ve always known where the Philippines is, because that’s where my mother and father met each other and were married. When World War II came along I was quite interested in the Philippines (because of) General (Douglas) MacArthur,” said Aldrin.

Axe, the contest’s sponsor has created the website www.axeapollo.com , where interested applicants can register to join. Deadline for joining is February 3.
