Sanders supporters celebrate “Bernie Day” in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO – Bay Area residents made posters, created t-shirts, danced and even took photos with a cut-out of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

They called it Bernie Day, and Sanders supporters of San Francisco say they are taking the lead to help him win California.

“There’s a lot of progressives and liberals here,” Bernie Day organizer Nate Mezmer said. “We’re very open-minded in San Francisco, so to not support Bernie Sanders Campaign would almost be blasphemous.”

According to a new Field Poll, Sanders has 46 percent of support from likely Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters in the San Francisco Bay Area and Central Coast.

That is three points behind Hillary Clinton, who is leading the region by 49 percent.

But overall, Sanders’ momentum in recent months has cut into Clinton’s once double-digit lead across the state and reduced the gap to just six points.

Wearing his Sanders gear, Filipino American John Cruz cleaned the park to celebrate his candidate’s eighth straight victory in the last nine nomination contests.

“More and more people are finding out what Bernie is about. They’re seeing his track record of all the work he’s done from when he was in his 20s,” Cruz said. “He’s always been consistent and ahead as far as the issues. Everything he’s fighting for now he stood for for many decades.”

Cruz encourages other Fil-Ams to join him in voting for Sanders.

“We need to look at then Secretary Hillary Clinton and Senator Sanders’ track record,” Cruz said. “See for yourself! And you’ll know that Bernie is the right candidate for us.”

The Clinton Campaign and its supporters are also active in San Francisco. On Friday, the former Secretary of State will join actor George Clooney at a fundraiser in the Nob Hill District.
