Jessica Sanchez, Gab Valenciano wow crowd at Kalayaan SF Fest

SAN FRANCISCO – The energy was electrifying at the recent Kalayaan SF Festival at the Union Square in San Francisco.

During the TFC Hour hosted by Kapamilya talents Ginger Conejero and Gelo, American Idol finalist Jessica Sanchez impressed with her powerful voice. She said, “I just want to thank everyone for supporting me since Idol and even before that, when I was making Youtube videos online when I was like 10 years old. I just want to say thank you.”

“Super Selfie King” Gab Valenciano captivated kababayans with his explosive moves. He also took time to thank his fans for their support, saying, “If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be where I am.”

Music prodigy Matthew John wowed the crowd with his heartfelt cello rendition of current hits. When it comes to performing for the Filipino community, he expressed, “I embrace them so much because they’ve given their time to watch me and that’s something that I could never repay and I just have to keep working for.”

The Bay Area Filipino American community and the San Francisco Philippine Consulate General have organized Kalayaan SF Festival for three years now.

What makes this festival different is that the organizers also honor “Kalayaan Heroes” — the men and women who make a difference in the community.

Among those honored were school board member Thelma Boac and retired broadcast journalist, Lloyd Lacuesta.

Boac remarked, “I take the meaning of hero very, very seriously — which really, truly continues to empower me.”

“If I motivated some young Filipino Americans to think about going into journalism, then I’m happy. I accept that recognition,” stated Lacuesta.

Philippine Senate President Franklin Drilon, who graced the event, said it’s heartwarming to see overseas Filipinos staying true to their roots.

“I feel good. I can see the enthusiasm, the desire of the Filipinos to connect once more to their homeland,” said Drilon.

Kalayaan SF Festival also showcased traditional Filipino dances, food and products that kababayans continue to appreciate and patronize in their adopted country.
