San Francisco consulate celebrates Philippine Independence Day

SAN FRANCISCO — The Rigodon de Honor performance traditionally opens a formal event, as it did on this evening’s celebration of 120 years of Philippine independence.

It was acclaimed pianist — Dr. Raul Sunico — who headlined the evening.

Dr. Sunico, who continues to perform all over the world, says it was an honor for him to be invited by Consul General Henry Bensurto and play for the Filipino community of the Bay Area.

According to Bensurto, he wanted to transform the consulate in keeping with the spirit of adapting to Fil-Am millennials who are a part of the innovation age.

“We thought that this year is the year we will hold independence day here at the consulate, because we want to showcase our culture. And what a way to showcase the culture if it is done in the very house where you are.”

Surrounding cities in the Bay have also planned to recognize its Fil-Am residents in their own celebrations of Philippine independence.
