Romero Duno in US preparing for LA Forum fight night

LOS ANGELES — While Mercito Gesta get his chance at a world title later this month at the LA Forum, a rising Filipino will also appear on the card.

Mercito Gesta won’t be the only Pinoy boxer fighting at the LA Forum on January 27th.

Lined up on the Golden Boy-promoted card is Filipino prospect Romero Duno, who looks to add another knock out to his 15-and 1 record. He’s ended 13 of those fights early.

“I’m going to be ready ano laya Ang Handa sa Laban yun nga lang sa condition, Siguro medjo kulang pero ma abot.”

The 22-year old from Tagum City takes on Mexican Yardley Suarez, whom Southern California Filipino fight fans May remember as the victim of a vicious Mark Magsayo knock-out at the 2015 Pinoy Pride event in Carson.

“Lahat naman Ng boxer Hindi underestimate kalaban kailangan talaga galing pag ensayo kasi hindi lang sya kalaban mo. Marami pa susunod kaya kailangan ko mag improve Ng mas higher than this.”

Duno arrived at the Wild Card gym last month, where he trains under former champion Rodel Mayol. He fought last October and has remained active, but says he still needs to prepare more.

“Maganda naman Ng sparring ko. Medjo ma bagal pa konti pero mahahabol pa naman.”

Golden Boy signed Duno to a multi-year deal — an impressive showing on the 27th will bring him closer to the ultimate goal, a shot at a world title.
