Role reversal for Anne Hathaway in “The Intern”

NEW YORK  – It’s not a sequel to “The Devil Wears Prada,” but it does feel like a role reversal of sorts for Anne Hathaway in her latest movie “The Intern”

From playing an intern in “The Devil Wears Prada”, Hathaway now plays the role of Jules Ostin – the boss of a successful Brooklyn start-up.

Her intern: 70-year-old Ben Whittaker, played by Robert De Niro.

“The Intern” is a comedy about Ben, a widower, who wants to come out of retirement and decides to become a senior intern for Jules, who runs an online fashion site.

Writer and director Nancy Meyers, who is known for sophisticated romantic comedies, says fans of Hathaway will be very happy to see her back in a role that shows her range as an actress.

“Back like ‘Devil Wears Prada’, she went into the dramatic world and made a lot of very dramatic movies,” Meyers said. “She did a great job but she can always do both. This movie gave her the chance to be comedic and dramatic.”

“So I just really let myself be guided. So this process for me was more about being open to anything and not offering resistance or againstness, you know?” Hathaway said.

Meyers says many viewers would relate to the story.

In the film, De Niro’s character Ben said, “Musicians don’t retire, they stop when there’s no more music in them.”

When asked if she feels that same way about making films as Ben feels about making music, Meyers said, “As long as I have a little tune in my head, I will. And then I won’t when I feel I’m done — then I’m done. I think it will be a natural thing.”

To the same point, De Niro said: “It’s the same thing, you could apply it to that, absolutely. When I’m falling on the floor about to die I’d still be…”

“I hope he never retires for sure,” Hathaway added. “I mean I always imagined myself as a lifer in this business. I hope I get to keep doing it.”

Meantime, Hathaway and Filipina Broadway star Lea Salonga have one thing in common — they both played Fantine in the hit musical “Les Miserables”.

Salonga is returning to Broadway with a new musical called “Allegiance.”

Hathaway said, “If I’m here, absolutely, I’ll go to see it. I mean who wants to miss an opportunity to see do what she does. She’s so exquisite at it.”

“The Intern” is now playing theaters in the US and in the Philippines.
