Roach vs Floyd Sr., the other main event

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Only Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. will throw punches in the ring on May 2nd.

But their game plans come from 2 of the best trainers in boxing. Freddie Roach and Floyd Mayweather Sr. are far from friends.

Roach has been the force behind the Pacman’s rise.

“We’ve been together 15 years now and it’s been a great 15,” said Roach.

Roach had a hard hitting 40-15 record before finding his calling in the corner training dozens of champions, contenders, and even celebrities at the Wild Card Gym. He’s been named on Trainer of the Year seven times.

Floyd Mayweather’s corner is a family affair while Floyd has been trained by both his father Floyd Sr. and his uncle Roger Mayweather. Money will go with his dad for the fight of the century.

The Michigan native had gone on to have a 28-6-1 pro career before training the likes of Oscar De La Hoya and Laila Ali.

A defensive mastermind, his poetic mouth can be just as fluid as the moves he teaches his fighters.

“I’m the best. I must confess. From all the rest, there’s no contest. I shock your man. I’m one of a kind. I’m the greatest trainer of all time,” said Mayweather Sr.

“I really don’t hate Floyd Mayweather Sr,” said Roach. “His poems are cute, I don’t really like cute coming from a guy.”

While neither fighter has talked much in the weeks leading to the fight of the century both trainers have fired a few verbal jabs at each other.

“Freddie the joke coach roach I keep telling you,” said Mayweather Sr.

“Floyd Jr. has always been nice to me,” said Roach. “Every time he passed me, I walk, I pass through the hallway he says ‘hi Mr. Roach’. He’s very respectful. I have not had problems with fighter. I have had problems with roger and his father but nothing really serious. It’s just competitive. We talk leading up to the fight. The fight is here. The trash talk is over.”

The rival coaches do share a common battle: health issues. Roach has improved with his parkinson’s while Big Floyd had a bout with the lung disease sarcoidosis.

“I don’t have sarcoidosis anymore,” said Mayweather Sr. “I’m that type of guy. I work hard. And when you work hard things usually results in what you’re doing.”

“The key is just not to lay down and die. I work out every day,” said Roach.

While the Roach trained Oscar De La Hoya during his lost to Floyd Jr. who was trained by his uncle Roger, Roach did get a big win over Big Floyd in 2009 when the Pacman knocked out Ricky Hatton in two rounds.

While both trainers will be in their respective corners for the fight of the century both agree that win or lose this battle will not define their legacies.
