Over a dozen supporters sat and listened to Filipino American Congressman TJ Cox during a recent fundraiser in San Bruno, California.
And as he sought donations for his 2020 re-election bid, Cox couldn’t deny his support for the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump.
“I can tell you that my colleagues and I, we came to Congress for a specific reason: to make a positive difference in the lives of the people we serve by providing quality, affordable healthcare, clean air, clean water, immigration reform, lowering the cost of prescription drugs. Those are the things that really matter to people. But we also support and uphold the Constitution. And this is a president who has completely disregarded the Constitution. And so we’ve launched this impeachment inquiry to look at the facts, and then we’ll make a decision depending on where those facts lead us.”
Cox, the first Fil-Am from California to win a seat in Congress, is the last of the seven freshmen California Democrats who defeated Republican incumbents in 2018 to show support for impeachment.
“I work on the things that are going to make a positive difference tomorrow and today on the lives of the people that I represent. And the sideshow with what this president’s been doing, really doesn’t concern me directly. But there comes a point in time when you completely disregard the law, when it comes down to a presidential extortion. These are high crimes of the most serious nature. And then we’re forced to take a position.”
Cox said he is not concerned that his support for impeachment will affect his reelection campaign.
“The thing that I focus on each and every day is working for the people, getting out there and speaking to the people, making a positive difference on what matters to them. And on that record, I’m very happy with where we’re at with what we’ve done and where we’re going and what we’ll continue to do.”
Cox and David Valadajo will once again be going head-to-head in 2020 to represent California’s 21st district.
