Rappler CEO Maria Ressa convicted of cyber libel

“A cautionary tale:” that’s how Maria Ressa describes her fate, after a Manila court convicted her and a former Rappler writer/researcher of cyber-libel. The total damages in the case were worth P400,000.

Rappler has been absolved from any liability.

The court found that the allegations in the original article against business-owner Wilfredo Keng — which accused him of involvement in illegal activities based on a intelligence report — were “defamatory” and not confirmed with law enforcement agencies.
