REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – President Barack Obama will be traveling to Asian countries in the later part of April to meet with the leaders of Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia and the Philippines.

The White House says this is part of his ongoing commitment to increase US diplomatic, economic and security engagement with countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Philippines will be the fifth Asian treaty ally he will have visited during his presidency.

Obama will meet with President Benigno Aquino III to highlight economic and security cooperation.

This includes the modernization of US defense alliance, expansion of economic ties and sparking economic growth in the region.

Last year, Obama canceled a trip to Asia, that included stops in Malaysia and the Philippines, because of the partial government shutdown.
