REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – Getting a marriage annulled can be a complicated process, but Pope Francis wants to make it easier.

According to an announcement from the Vatican, the Holy Father appointed a commission to simplify the annulment of Catholic marriages.

Church law does not allow divorces, but annulments can be granted if a marriage is proven invalid.

Annulments are more prevalent among Catholic’s in the U.S., compared to other countries.

U.S. Catholics also opt for civil divorces, which the Church does not recognize.

Debate on the issue is expected at a Vatican meeting on the family, set for October.
