REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – The influence of religion over everyday life in America is declining and according to a new poll most Americans see that as a bad thing.

The Pew Research Center found that nearly three quarters of Americans, 72 percent, say that religion is losing its influence on American life. It’s the highest number since the Pew Research Center started this poll in 2001.

Meanwhile, 56 percent of those surveyed feel disappointed over the decline.

The results were split on whether or not churches should take a stand on social and political issues, with 49 percent saying churches should express their views and 48 percent saying they should keep out.

The Pew Research Center says the results reflect a growing divide between religiously affiliated Americans and those with no ties to any religion.

Should religion play a bigger role in politics?
