REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – A new 2014 Pew Research Center survey says that close to 85 percent of young Catholics, between the ages of 18 and 29, believe that gays and lesbians should be accepted by society.

Seventy-five percent of them support legalizing same-sex weddings, but only 57 percent of older Catholics, aged 65 and above, believe that homosexuality should be accepted.

The report caused backlash among conservative bishops.

A Catholic website says the report’s welcoming attitude toward homosexuality is “destroying the church from the inside.”

Should the church and the faithful heed the call of young Catholics to be more accepting of gays and lesbians?
