Political analyst: Duterte’s move to cut VFA a ‘big security risk’ for the Philippines

Philippine senators on Monday night rushed their adoption of Resolution 312, which appeals to President Rodrigo Duterte to reconsider his plan to terminate the Visiting Forces Agreement, while the Senate thoroughly reviews the VFA’s impact on the country’s interests.

But on Tuesday in Manila, the office of the president issued this announcement.

“The President directed Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea to tell Secretary Teddy Boy Locsin of the Foreign Affairs to send the notice of termination to the US government last night. And the Executive Secretary sent the message to Secretary Teddy Boy Locsin and the latter signed the notice of termination and then sent to the US government today,” said Salvador Panelo, Duterte Spokesman & Chief Legal Counsel.

The Department of Foreign Affairs then confirmed secretary Teodoro Locsin’s signing of the notice of termination.

Sec. Teddyboy Locsin meanwhile on his social media account later on disclosed the U.S. Embassy’s receipt of the notice. The termination will take effect after 180 days.

In a statement, the U.S. embassy in the Philippines says it considers the president’s decision as a “serious step with significant implications for the US-Philippines alliance.

It adds that it will carefully consider how to move forward given the two countries’ shared interests.

For a U.S.-based Fil-Am political analyst Prof. Jay Gonzalez at Golden Gate University, it’s a big security risk for the Philippines.

The WINNER here is the Filipino activist who rallies and protests on the Human Rights violations about the anti-drug policy of Duterte. With the help of Democrat leftist Senators, Durbin, Leahy and Markey and they succeeded releasing De Lima from PH prison. De Lima was the former head of the Nat Human Rights Commission in the PH. Jailed by Duterte for drug manufacturing inside Muntinlupa, Prison, and allegedly was the head of Drug Cartel involving 5 Generals during the Aquino Admin known as the Godfather. Drugs were rampant, sales were digitally computerized from the City up to the Rural BARRIO areas successfully targeting elementary students… The LOSERS here are the PH Military and the Gov’t,if you observe the joint US-PH military exercises always begin at the Sea then landing craft bring troops into the shore, they call that Beached Landing. There is a purpose for this, they are preparing our PH and US troops, that someday they will take over the disputed Island occupied by China. The same exercises or more rigid exercises given to all ASEAN nations.
