Glendale, Calif–It’s a dance-based exercise craze that many Filipinos enjoy; Zumba. For every hour of Zumba, the average 160-pound person burns about 500 calories.
“You lose a lot of calories when you do Zumba it’s an hour of exercise and you don’t realize an hour has passed because its really fun doing it,” said instructor Noni Bellarmino.
Some of Southern California’s popular Filipino Zumba instructors are using the fitness craze to fund medical missions in the Philippines.
“I’d like to partner up with them and raise funds especially they’re going o the Philippines for medical mission and its very close to my heart I’m from the Philippines, I grew up in the Philippines so I wanted to give back to the community,” explained Deekee Gaerland, the Zumba instructor who organized the event.
The funds, a little less than a thousand dollars from this day will go straight to the Charitable Endowment Support for a medical mission in Bulacan.
“We have helped patients with breast and thyroid cancer, cleft lip pallets, deformities. We will do surgeries for about 40 of them and this will directly benefit those people because they cannot afford the surgery,” explained Yolanda Abaca of CES.
