Pinoys join community to mourn mass shooting victims

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – A small memorial stood outside the Inland Regional Center as authorities continue investigating Wednesday’s deadly shooting.

The signs are pointing to possible terrorism ties for the deceased suspects Sayed Farook and Tashfeen Malik, but the suspects were far from the minds of residents as their healing process began with a candle light vigil. 

Names of the 14 fallen and 21 injured have been released and were remembered one by one, as candles lit up a blacked out San Manuel baseball stadium. 

Filipinos came to mourn with the community and some of them have ties to the center.

“It’s just unbelievable because a terrorist shooting just happened,” said Hazel Cabanatan, who has friends that work at the Regional Center. “I just couldn’t grasp it that right down the street from my house it would happen.” 

One Filipino who declined to go on camera works at the Inland Regional Center and was friends with Daniel Kaufman, one of the deceased victims. He was locked down for six hours and with the Inland Regional Center an active crime scene, his car is still there. 

The street where the suspects were killed, as well as their home remained active time scenes with more weapons including bombs found in the home and in their rented vehicle.

As the local community commemorates the lives lost, the rest of the nation will also join in the mourning. President Obama has ordered that flags be flown half staff for the next several days.
