Pinoys for Trump at CA GOP convention

SACRAMENTO, CA — Republicans gathered at the state’s capitol in Sacramento this past weekend for the spring 2017 convention of the California Republican Party.

Among them were Filipino-American Republicans Cristina Osmena, and Rudy Asercion.

While President Trump continues to be protested against and criticized nationwide, the Fil-Am Trump supporters say some Americans are finding it hard to understand  his policies — like the controversial travel ban.

Asercion says that the President was only following through on his campaign promise — to protect the country from any possible threats.

“This is all a process of securing the border and making sure everyone who comes to the United States are vetted,” said Asercion. “Making sure no terrorist, or no people who intend to harm Americans, step foot on American soil.”

Meanwhile, Osmena acknowledges that the travel ban could have been handled better.

“I think that the ban itself and the way it was executed could have been done a lot better. It left a lot of people stranded,” she says. “It was not necessary, and it was perhaps insensitive to the fact that there are many US residents who are foreigners, people who travel in and out of this country.”

Regarding immigration overall, they believe in the president’s tough stance on proper documentation, and going after the undocumented who have criminal backgrounds.

While the Philippines was not listed in the President’s current ban, they say that the fear of kababayans traveling in and out of the US is unwarranted.

“If they have legal status, I don’t think they’re going to have any problem whatsoever,” said Asercion. “If they did some criminal things, they will be deported for sure… but if you’re an honest working Filipino citizen, and going back to the United States from the Philippines, you shouldn’t have any problem.”

Another campaign promise was the repeal and replacement of the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare.

As Republican town halls across the country are filled with angry Americans demanding action from their elected leaders — these conservatives are hopeful that their party will come up with a solution.

“My sense is that it’s going to take a while, because not all the Republicans are on board about what they want to change,” said Asercion. “So it’s going to be a long process, but ultimately it’s going to be very good and very affordable.”

“I am hoping and expecting that it will be repealed and replaced, not just repealed,” said Osmena. “Since 2010, we had six years to plan and architect a replacement for this Affordable Care Act and there have been other Republican alternatives, like the Cassidy-Sessions bill that has been proposed.”

Despite the support from these kababayans and their fellow Republicans — according to the latest poll from NBC and the Wall Street Journal, Trump’s overall approval rating stands at 44%.

His disapproval rate is 48%.

My opinion, Obamacare will be replace by the end of the year, but the implementation will be next year, before November local election. There will be a delay for political reason the Dems will block and delay the replacement, the GOP will wait until voters will cry and give-up due to high cost of Obamacare. The GOP want the voters to feel the pain on what the Democrat lied to them for passing Obamacare.Another GOP strategy is to wait for Obamacare to fall by itself and blame the Democrat for delaying the replacement. GOPs objective is to continue and win the control of the Senate and the Congress on 2018 election.
