LOS ANGELES–Los Angeles is known as an entertainment town and a sports city, but on this weekend, it was the sports entertainment Mecca as the Staples Center hosted the World Wrestling Entertainment’s annual summer slam event drawing tens of thousands of wrestling fans including Filipinos to watch and meet their favorite professional wrestlers. “It’s great especially when they come out to the west coast. We’re only a couple hours away from LA so when they come out here we just look forward to seeing the matches the pay-per- views,” said Lawrence Manalo of San Diego.

One lucky fan from Quezon City got the trip of a life time, winning a Studio 23 trivia contest, which got him a vacation to Los Angeles, a visit to the summer slam weekend festivitiesa and a view of summer slam from a luxury suite. “The event was everything I expected it to be 2-3 hours of just exhilaration, excitement so I think for any wrestling fan this would have been every hour on the plane,” said Studio 23 contest winner Miguel Cortez.

Despite a packed Staples Center for the Summer Slam pay-per-view, wrestling viewership has dropped in the US in recent years.however it still remains popular in Asia especially the Philippines.

A life long fan, Cortez believes its the pinoy passion for drama and sports that keeps many Filipinos hooked. “They call it a male soap opera. It’s one long engaging story basically mixed with a little bit of sports if you’re into something that’s an adrenaline rush even rock music for the entrance theme and if you’re into a good story it’s about whether its about a love angle or whatever wrestling has it,” he explained.
