SAN DIEGO, Calif. – A judge has ruled that Filipino American triple murder suspect Carlo Mercado is mentally unfit to stand trial after his public defender described him as significantly mentally ill.

Mercado is accused of killing brothers Salvatore and Gianni Belevdere, and Gianni’s fiancee, Ilona Flint.

He is believed to have shot at least two of them at a shopping center parking lot last Christmas Eve…while the third victim was found several weeks later in a car trunk a hundred miles away.

The judge has ordered that Mercado be committed to a mental hospital. If and when his competency is restored the trial will continue.

No motive has been determined for the alleged triple shooting which carried a possible death penalty.
